Does CBD convert to THC in the Body?
What happens to CBD after you ingest it?
In 2016 a study conducted by Merrick that came to the conclusion CBD or Cannabidiol would be converted into THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol in the stomach when combined with the Gastric Juices in the stomach.
Naturally, consumers would worry hearing this as they were not seeking the psychoactive effects that can be attained by taking THC, only the potential benefits that CBD may offer without the psychoactive effects. Let's not forget that THC was also illegal in some states of the US and is Illegal in the UK.
The study by Merrick simulated the effects of the Gastric juices on CBD and found that CBD was converted into THC. However, Nahler, in 2017, disproved this, finding that CBD was not converted to THC and indicated that it was most likely caused by the fact that it is essentially impossible to recreate the natural conditions inside the human stomach.
It was further disproved in a 2017 report by Ethan Russo. Noting that the claim was not supported by any In Vivo studies (Human) and more significantly that there are no enzymes in the human Body that can convert CBD into THC. In two animal studies where the subject was administered with CBD when the blood plasma was later examined, no metabolites of THC were found, only the ones for CBD.
Interestingly a study from 2007 showed that CBD might even lessen the impact of THC when taken simultaneously, which leads to claims that CBD can have an antipsychotic effect.
So, CBD can't be converted into THC in the Body?
Research in humans and animals continues to disprove the results found by Merrick. In humans, there is no evidence that CBD can be converted into THC, even after taking very high doses. Like always, it recommended that more studies be carried out to test this further still.
It's vital to be careful where you buy your CBD from. There have been reports of companies selling Oils with higher THC contents than are legal. So make sure you spend time choosing where to buy CBD Oil in the UK. Always look for Lab Reports from Third-party companies to find the best quality CBD Oil and a great tip is to look for companies that are accredited by the CTA (Cannabis Trades Association)
